Self-Care Tips: Fresh Food, Fresh Air, Fresh Start!
Return to Self-Care Tips Index

What works for you?The way you eat...
Everybody eats different things, at different times, for different reasons. Most people don't think about why they eat what they eat. People eat when they are hungrey or have a taste for certain foods. You may pick foods because they are easy to fix or grab, or because you see a commercial that makes the food look delicious. Eating can give you "something to do" when you are by   yourself or with others. It can be easy to eat anything at anytime if you are feeling bored, sad, stressed-out or lonely.

You don't always get to choose what you eat. Sometimes you eat what your family or friends are eating or what they are serving in the school cafeteria. These tips can help you make easy, healthy changes. Pick one thing you would like to try.

These tips can help you make easy, healthy changes
Pick one thing you would like to try: Making Heathly Changes
Eat breakfast for a great start to your day
Make breakfast or lunch your biggest meal. Eat lighter dinners and don't snack after dinner.
Don't skip meals. If you skip meals, you get too hungry, and then you may eat anything.
Eat slowly. You'll enjoy your meals more, and your stomach will have a chance to tell you it is full.
Keep healthy snacks around for after school or between classes. Pretzels, bagels, low-fat crackers, air-popped popcorn and baby carrots are easy to keep in your backpack. Ask your family to help you keep healthy snacks in the house.

If you east fast food:
Try baked or grilled foods instead of fried foods.
Ask for sandwiches and burgers without sauces or mayonnaise; add mustard and relish instead.
Order salad and use Italian or low-fat dressing.

Share a small bag of french fries with a friend.
